Widespread in most river systems from Auckland south. Widespread in North and South Is. Range is stable (neither expanding nor declining) (Ref. 52336). Also introduced in Lake Taupo in 1890s (Ref. 32720). Has drastically affected native galaxiid populations by predation (Ref. 43891). Probably the most important recreational freshwater fish. Voucher specimen(s) held at the NMNZ (as Salmo trutta Linnaeus 1758 in Ref. 5755). Also Ref. 11115.
